Lawanda graduated with honors from Herbert H. Lehman College, the City University of New York in 1994 after serving in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years. Her basic nursing career includes medical surgical, step-down, telemetry, operating room, and home health nursing. She has worked at major health care systems including, the Veterans Administration Medical Centers in NYC, and the Bronx, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, and the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
In 1998, she completed an Adult Nurse Practitioner program at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, New York. In 2007, she was awarded a Doctorate degree in Health Administration. As an Advanced Practice Nurse, she has gained invaluable experience in various specialties and settings to include: Federal Qualified Health Care Clinic, Critical Care, Prison Health, Community Health, Opioid Addiction, Skilled and Assisted care living facilities. Her career has included several Nurse Executive roles such as in managed care, as well as secondary and tertiary care environments.
Alan R. Smith, M.D.
Alan joined Saluda Telemedicine LLC as Medical Director in April 2020. He brings years of experience, and excellent directive to the practice with insight for its future.
Alan also holds the position of Chief Medical Officer for Staywell/WellCare of Florida, subsidiaries of Centene; providing strategic direction for clinical programs related to Medicare and Medicaid services, supporting clinical initiatives such as care management, disease management, utilization management, behavioral health, telehealth, pharmacy management, clinical integration, credentialing, community advocacy support for social determinants of health, and the quality management program including identification and closure of care gaps, improvement of clinical HEDIS and STAR measures, and NCQA accreditation.
Alan joined WellCare in 2003 as the medical director for WellCare of Florida. Since then, he has held several clinical leadership roles of increasing responsibility with the company, serving as vice president of population health, vice president of health services, senior medical director of pharmacy services, and corporate quality medical director.
Alan came to WellCare from Aetna, where his experience included serving as the regional quality management medical director for Aetna’s Southeast region. His previous roles included chief medical officer and medical director for Aetna Health Plans of Florida. Additonally, he has more than a decade of experience running a succesful internal medicine and geriatric practice, and served as an active NCQA surveyor for many years.
Alan earned a bachelor of science degree, with honors, in Chemistry from the University of Chicago, and a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, and was appointed clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago while serving as the chairman of internal medicine at the Medical Center of Gary, an Urban Health Initiative Program delivering medical care to the underserved inner city population in Gary, Indiana.
Alan has active medical licenses in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, New Jersey and South Carolina.
